Acylex Ointment 5% Ingredients and Usage
Acylex Ointment 5% contains Acyclovir as its active ingredient at a concentration of 5% per gram. Acyclovir is a guanosine nucleoside analogue and belongs to the topical antiviral class of medicines. Doctors prescribe Acylex Ointment 5% for initial episodes of genital herpes and mucocutaneous herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections.
The ointment also treats limited herpes simplex infections in patients with weakened immune systems, including organ transplant recipients and cancer patients. Its thicker base allows longer skin contact and sustained drug delivery on moist or genital lesions.
Acylex Ointment 5% reduces lesion pain, healing time, and viral shedding during an active outbreak. The medicine controls symptoms but does not remove the herpes virus from the body permanently.
How Does Acylex Ointment 5% Work?
Acylex Ointment 5% delivers acyclovir directly into skin and mucosal cells infected by the herpes simplex virus. Viral thymidine kinase enzymes inside infected cells convert acyclovir into acyclovir monophosphate. Cellular kinases then transform it into the active form, acyclovir triphosphate.
Acyclovir triphosphate inhibits viral DNA polymerase, the enzyme the virus uses to replicate its genetic material. The drug also incorporates into the growing viral DNA chain and terminates further elongation.
This selective action blocks viral multiplication only in infected cells, leaving healthy tissue unaffected. The result is faster lesion crusting, reduced pain, and shorter outbreak duration.
Acylex Ointment 5% Side Effects
Acylex Ointment 5% is well tolerated, with most reactions confined to the application site. These effects are usually mild and resolve as treatment progresses.

Warnings
Acylex Ointment 5% is for external use only and must not be applied inside the eyes, mouth, or nose.
Rinse the area thoroughly with water if the ointment accidentally contacts the eyes or mucous membranes.
Always use a finger cot or disposable glove during application to prevent autoinoculation and viral transmission.
Wash hands before and after each application to limit virus spread to other body sites or people.
Do not use Acylex Ointment 5% if you are allergic to acyclovir, valacyclovir, or any other ingredient in the formulation.
Acylex Ointment 5% does not prevent transmission of genital herpes through sexual contact, even when no lesions are visible.
Consult your doctor before use during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or in patients with severely compromised immune function.
Stop treatment and seek medical advice if severe burning, blistering, or signs of allergic reaction develop.
For serious or recurrent HSV infections, oral acyclovir therapy may be more effective than topical treatment.
