Acylex Cream 5% Ingredients and Usage
Acylex Cream 5% contains Acyclovir as its active ingredient at a concentration of 5% per gram. Acyclovir is a guanosine nucleoside analogue and belongs to the topical antiviral class of medicines. Doctors prescribe Acylex Cream 5% to treat herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections of the skin.
The cream targets cold sores, also called herpes labialis, on the lips and around the mouth in adults and adolescents. It works best when applied at the first tingling or itching sensation that signals an outbreak.
Acylex Cream 5% reduces the severity, pain, and duration of cold sore episodes. The medicine controls symptoms but does not eliminate the herpes virus from the body.
How Does Acylex Cream 5% Work?
Acylex Cream 5% delivers acyclovir directly to skin cells infected by the herpes simplex virus. Viral thymidine kinase enzymes inside infected cells convert acyclovir into acyclovir monophosphate. Cellular kinases then transform it into the active form, acyclovir triphosphate.
Acyclovir triphosphate inhibits viral DNA polymerase, the enzyme the virus needs to copy its genetic material. The drug also incorporates into the growing viral DNA strand and terminates further chain elongation.
This dual action selectively blocks viral replication in infected cells without harming healthy skin tissue. The result is faster lesion healing and reduced viral shedding during an outbreak.
